The story of Brian's Dots is synonymous with the story of Brian Delozier.
It's not a stretch to call it an archetypal "hero's journey" of transformation and alchemy. Going through the darkness to find the light, a brighter light than before...
Allowing who we thought we were to decompose and fertilize the soil of who we are next becoming.
This documentary was made in 2018, and it captures the remarkable story of how Brian's Dots came into being through a powerful and transformative series of events.
But there's more to it than that.
"I don't want to be stuck in that identity forever," Brian has recently told me. "I've told this story probably a thousand times. It was twenty three years ago. I'm evolving. I don't want to identify with my accident anymore."
To leave the story forever where it is would be convenient. It's a pretty epic narrative, and a rather magnetic one. But where the 'movie' ends, life goes on. And we keep changing.
One thing I notice in Brian is a spirit of fierce authenticity.
So here we are. In this new, vibrant place of transformation, facing yet another reinvention.
"I thought I needed to figure out who I am now before I let go of that story."
(But maybe it's ok to just say what's true right now, undefined and messy as it is.)
"Who am I now? I'm the guy who doesn't want to be 'that guy' anymore. Waiting to see who or what I'm becoming..."
As Brian's Dots makes a major pivot in focusing more on original clothing (which has become Brian's passion), Brian finds himself filled with inspiration, energy, and a sincere desire to lean in to this evolution. The 'story' of this art is a powerful one. But it's not the end. It's only the beginning.
Just like your 'story', however inspiring, is still only 'what was.' The rest is being written right now.
